Laughter Classes Stress relief from laughter? Yes, no joke
In my Laughing Classes sometimes people join our group to feel the joy that comes laughing with others. Some come with great sadness, pain or trauma in their lives. No one knows what another students' burden might be. Many feel a bit self conscious. But together we breathe and we chuckle and by the end of class everyone is laughing. Your sides might ache. You might be panting from laughing so hard. But we all feel great. It's contagious!
Laughter can Stimulate many organs It enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.
Laughter Yoga has been effectively implemented in many Cancer Hospitals, helping the patients and their caregivers cope with pain and trauma. The Stanford and San Francisco University Medical Centers, conduct Laughter Yoga regularly during the chemotherapy sessions.
Your brain doesn't know the difference between fake laughter or real laughter. It just produces Seratonin, your body's own natural pain reliever, and stress reducer.
For years research has shown that laughter also lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle range of motion, boosts immune system function and increases cancer-fighting cells. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, produces a general sense of well-being for many other physical, mental, and emotional challenges. It fosters a positive and hopeful attitude. It is less likely for a person to succumb to stress and feelings of depression and helplessness, if one is able to laugh away their troubles.
It actually changes your brain chemistry:
A recent study at Stanford University concluded that laughter stimulates the parts of our brain that use the “feel good” chemical messenger dopamine. For example Parkinson Diseases is characterized by a lack of dopamine in the body. Clinical research on Laughter Yoga methods, conducted at the University of Graz in Austria, Bangalore, India, and in the United States has proven that Laughter lowers the level of stress hormones (epinephrine, cortisol, etc) in the blood.
You don't need to bring mats and there are no positions or asanas. Just be open to feeling better.
- Activate and relieve your stress response A rollicking laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response and increases your heart rate and blood pressure. The result? A good, relaxed feeling.
- Soothe tension Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.
- Improve your immune system Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can impact your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses.
- Relieve pain Laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers. Laughter may also break the pain-spasm cycle common to some muscle disorders.
- Increase personal satisfaction Laughter can also make it easier to cope with difficult situations. It also helps you connect with other people in a more positive manner.

Good reason #2: Self-Development. Learn something very healthy and empowering
Good reason #3: Even Fake Laughter has Health Benefits!
After I discovered Laughter Yoga, I learned that a certification program was held up here in Northern CA. Our joyful group was taught by the creator Dr. Madon Kataria, a Physician from Mumbai, India. I had the honor of learning directly from him at the Harbin Hot Springs.
